Fire strikes on second anniversary of Halemba colliery tragedy 21.11.2008

Twenty nine miners were evacuated, after the fire at the transformer station underground.

The fire broke out as a result of a short circuit says the spokesperson of the Mininig Office in Katowice Edyta Tomaszewska

‘It was caused by a short circuit , the transformer station will be now thoroughly studied by experts because even though we know it was a short circuit, we do not know what caused it ‘ she said

One of the injured miners is suffering from second degree burns, and has been transported to the Center for Burns Treatment  in Siemianowice.

The fire broke out exactly on the second anniversary of the greatest tragedy in Polish mining, a methane explosion in the same Halemba colliery, which killed 23 miners. Special commemorative events are held in Ruda Slaska today.
