Warsaw Jewish Ghetto tourist trail 20.11.2008

A tourist trail tracing the boundary of the former Warsaw Jewish Ghetto has been inaugurated in the Polish capital.  It consists of twenty one commemorative plaques bearing photographs from the period of World War Two. They were installed on walls and sunk into pavements, showing where the boundary of the ghetto was. At its height, the ghetto covered the area of 307 hectares with about 450,000 Jews crammed behind its walls. About 100,000 starved to death and 300,000 were transported to the Treblinka death camp. Until the trail had been created, it was difficult to imagine how big the ghetto was. Few remnants of that walled off Jewish quarter, created by the Nazis,  have remained to this day. New buildings replaced the ruined ones, the layout of streets changed, new squares were built. The project was financed mainly by the Warsaw city and the ministry of culture and developed in cooperation with the Jewish Historical Institute.
